I'm here to bring the DISCO back to discovery.

A journey through time spanning fifty years, during which the richest village becomes an island of financial tranquillity, and women, once forgotten or unwelcome guests, become inseparable from the ever-evolving academic field. Our companions will be the pioneers of science, Dr. Vilma Hugonnai, the first Hungarian woman to become a doctor, and Valéria Dienes, the first Hungarian woman to receive a scientific doctorate, and we will meet other legendary figures of the neighbourhood and of the Hungarian women's rights movement. Time seems to stand still in Tisztviselőtelep, so we may well cross paths with a quiet, absent-minded high school teacher, a certain Mihály Babits. You wouldn't guess that his latest scandal is all over the press, and the next time we see him he'll be in high school textbooks. Relying on the technology of the present, we discover the secrets kept by the trees that tell the tale of the district from its earliest days, and we equip ourselves for the future with a slogan that ran through Hungarian childhoods for generations.

A district sprouts out of the ground at a pace rarely seen, legends begin to grow where cabbages used to, and mysterious figures repopulate the urban mythology of the district named after its "American uncle", the fast-paced Windy City. If we are street-smart enough and know the secret signs, perhaps we too can get to know them, strolling down the streets familiar from a world-famous novel. On this walk we dive headfirst into a neighbourhood that can be loudly celebrated or harshly condemned, but forgotten? Never! Can we find traces of happy childhoods in a district notorious for its slums and shady characters? How did Citrom Bandi from Nefelejcs Street make it into literary history? How did twentieth-century history learn to whistle? Drawing on the latest trends in urbanism and stories shared by locals, we observe how dynamically cities change, and prove to ourselves that, for entirely different and much safer reasons, it is still worth walking alertly in the former stronghold of the urban underworld!

We embark on a journey through the historical city of Budapest and watch it transform into a bustling metropolis before our eyes, full of international connections, fascinating encounters and thought-provoking conversations. As we roam the streets, drifting with revolutionary ideas, we try to catch a glimpse or overhear a snippet of conversation, for everyone who matters will be there. But who decides who matters? What were the chances for someone lower-class, poor, or, as they were called at the time, an invalid? What was it like to live in a parallel reality, walled off in a city within the city? What made the ice cream crunchy in Budapest's first ice-cream parlour? Did the rose of Budapest ever have a chance to bloom? We take in the beauty of the familiar cityscape and let the once-scandalous buildings tell the stories of those who have not (yet) been given a say.

"Here is the city, we are its inhabitants": us, and the stories told in poems and songs. We meet in Mechwart Square at an ideal time, according to a sci-fi love poem, and locate places known to most Hungarians from poems and indie songs. How, and for how long, will we carry the legacy of the seventies and the Budapest of that time with us? We start by exploring Neoplatonic achievements (whatever they might be), examine historical events through texts from different eras, and see what we have done to achieve the 2030 goals of the best-known poet of the area. Fortuna takes us on her wings to the built legacy of a new hope and a technological revolution that seemed futuristic at the time. We find out what the smelting industry has to do with the stench of downtown Buda, look at the theoretical and practical trends in remembrance, and reflect together on what is worth preserving for posterity.

Let's take a fresh look at the downtown paths we've travelled a thousand times, this time through the timeless perspective of the trees. Along the way we are accompanied by the silent witnesses of history, offering glimpses of the turbulent and joyful moments they have seen. We'll discover whose love for trees still shades our daily lives, and who dedicated his writing to the sumac trees in the courtyards. From Budapest's transplanted trees we'll learn lessons in resilience and adaptation, and we'll honour the trees that once defined an era but are no longer part of the cityscape. "Whoever loves flowers cannot be a bad person", but over time, have the well-intentioned decisions that shaped our country's ecosystem always been the right ones? What do climate change and the future hold for the trees of our city? Can they keep pace with this new reality? And, more importantly, can we?

The saying goes that true discovery requires not new landscapes but new eyes, and oh boy is that true! Nehru-part is a well-known, pulsating hub of community life in Pest, but how many people know the story behind its name? Over the past decade the area has evolved from a home for ultra-modern industrial buildings into a green space reclaimed by nature and by relaxing city dwellers, yet at almost every step we still stumble on landmarks of the past. We tour the park discussing urban biodiversity, the impact of climate change on cities, and the river that continues to shape the cityscape (for who knows how long). Along the way we clean up, so that those who come after us can enjoy a cleaner environment. We pay special attention to cigarette butts, each of which can contaminate up to 1,000 litres of groundwater as it decomposes, and let this meticulous work deepen our connection to the present moment.
